digest golf
what are the best golf irons, drivers and wedges?

i play old callaway X16s now and im lookin to buy new clubs but have no idea what to buy. i reviewed the Golf Digest hot list but those clubs pertain to the year they are out. what i want to know is what irons, drivers and wedges are the best rated of all time. i love m 3 ball white hot putter so im fine with putters and woods r good too. i shoot in the mid 80s that helps

ok, so the best thing to do is try clubs out for yourself at a golf shop, this is only because everyone has a different swing and every club is different and will feel different. first start with what is in your price range then, hit the ones that appeal to your eye, if you don’t like the way they look you won’t like them. then get fitted with a higher tech system so they can be tailored correctly. good luck. have fun.

Of late, the USGA has been putting all sorts of rules and restrictions on club head design to prevent that very situation from occurring. This is why designers have to be more creative in designing clubs. One method is to design clubs around the way average golfers swing, rather than creating perfect clubs and expecting golfers to swing that way. The most common tendency is when a golfer comes over the top and makes an outside-in move evident by most shots off the tee resulting into a push, fade or the dreaded slice. A Golf Digest article Add 42 Yards Now explained that if you were able to change to more of an inside-out movement a golfer who swung 95 mph could gain as much as 42 yards. Of course, this would require a huge change in how the person swings the club and let’s face it most golfers are not going to be able to put in that time and effort. But through creating design features in the club head, the golfer can be encouraged to make more of an inside path. This is how the Acer XDS Insider got its name. The profile of the head as well as the contour on the crown was specifically designed to create a mental picture of swinging from the inside to encourage one to swing the driver on an inside-out swing path instead of that dreaded distance robbing over-the-top move. The XDS Insider also helps you in other ways. Internal weighting creates a draw bias shifting weight toward the heel to assist in rotating the head and squaring the face at impact. The face angle is a little more closed than normal to provide some additional corrective measures but cleverly disguised by the masking on the crown to provide a square appearance so they can just trust their natural swing. Lastly, the Acer XDS Insider also boasts a variable face thickness, cup face design to make the entire club face becomes one gigantic sweet spot and ensure all the distance possible. Comes with FREE Headcover!

The TaylorMade R11 Driver can activate three dimensions to distance. It allows golfers to adjust the loft to increase or decrease launch angle to get more distance. It allows one to change the face angle to select an open, closed or neutral address setting for more distance. Also, you can switch the flight path to promote a fade, by moving the heavier weight in the toe/lighter weight in the heel or promote a draw by moving the the lighter weight in the toe and the heavier weight in the heel, which both promote more distance. In addition, the R11′s Aero Shape clubhead promotes faster swing speed, by allowing wind to flow smoother over the crown, while its rounded crown design reduces drag.

This R11 Driver provides eight different Flight Control Technology (FCT) positions, in which you can increase or decrease the launch angle in .5 increments, while also changing the spin rate. With the Adjustable Sole Plate (ASP), you can adjust the face angle to be open, closed or neutral. This will independently tune the face angle without affecting the loft.
